Few months ago we wrote about misleading poster hanging in the Faculty of Law and Administration of the Univerisity of Gdansk’s Library. For those who are not familiar with Polish copyright law: there are no legal restrictions to copy even if it is a whole books if you fulfill allowed personal use requirements. There’s nothing to hide, publishers’ lobby does not like this regulation. It also appears that personal use regulations are discussable not only in Poland. Canadian Simon Fraser University published controversial interpretation of a right to citation in their library. According to which “written permission is required from the copyright owner for the author of any thesis to include more than “500 words or 2%” of any work”. These are frankly absurd restrictions. There is nothing in Canadian law to support or require them. Please read an article titled „SFU SNAFU” written by Howard Knopf. I truly hope this article will not inspire employees of the mentioned library in Gdansk. ;)
